Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans

Original Medicare Covers 80%. Plan G Covers the Rest.

Medicare Supplement insurance — commonly called Medigap — fills the gaps Original Medicare leaves behind. If a major hospital stay or specialist visit is on your mind, a Medigap plan in St. Joseph, MO is how you keep one unexpected bill from becoming a financial crisis.

What Medicare Supplement Insurance Actually Does

Original Medicare (Parts A and B) is solid foundational coverage, but it was never designed to cover everything. It leaves you responsible for deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments that can add up quickly after a serious illness or surgery. A Medicare Supplement plan sits alongside Original Medicare and picks up those remaining costs — so you know exactly what you'll owe before you ever walk into a hospital.

Medigap plans are sold by private insurance carriers, but they're standardized by the federal government. That means a Plan G from Aetna covers the same benefits as a Plan G from Mutual of Omaha. What varies between carriers is the monthly premium — and that's exactly where an independent broker earns their place in your corner.

WHY OUR CLIENTS CHOOSE US

Carriers We Work With for Medigap Coverage in Missouri

As an independent broker, we work with multiple carriers — which means we compare options across the market on your behalf rather than steering you toward one company's product. Top Medigap carriers we work with in Missouri include:

  • Aetna
  • AARP / UnitedHealthcare
  • Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Missouri
  • Mutual of Omaha
  • Cigna

Because Medigap benefits are standardized, the comparison we run for you focuses on premium pricing, carrier rate history, and financial stability — the factors that actually differentiate one Plan G from another over the long term.

JJI Agency has been helping Northwest Missouri residents navigate Medicare since before most of the current plan options existed. Todd Joe brings more than 20 years of experience to every Medicare conversation, and our team serves clients across St. Joseph, Maryville, and the surrounding counties from two local offices. We're independent, which means our only obligation is to find the right fit for you.

If you're turning 65, coming off employer coverage, or simply wondering whether your current Medigap plan is still the best option available, we're glad to take a look. Reach out to schedule a no-pressure consultation at either of our Northwest Missouri locations.

Plan G, Plan N, and the Medigap Alphabet — What You Need to Know

There are 12 standardized Medigap plan types available to Medicare beneficiaries in St. Joseph and across Missouri. Most people end up choosing between Plan G and Plan N, and for good reason — they offer the strongest combination of coverage and value for most beneficiaries.

Here's how the most commonly enrolled plans compare:

  • Plan G — The most enrolled Medigap plan in St. Joseph. Covers all Original Medicare cost-sharing except the annual Part B deductible ($257 in 2024). Also covers emergency care outside the U.S. If you want the most comprehensive coverage available to new enrollees, Plan G is typically the answer.
  • Plan N — Covers the same core benefits as Plan G with one difference: you pay a small copay (up to $20) for office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that don't result in inpatient admission. Premiums are lower than Plan G, making it a strong fit for people who see the doctor infrequently.
  • Plan F — The most comprehensive Medigap plan ever offered, covering the Part B deductible as well. Plan F is no longer available to anyone who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 — but if you enrolled before that date, you may still be eligible to keep or switch to Plan F.

The right plan letter depends on how often you use healthcare, which doctors you see, and what your prescription costs look like. We review all of it before making a recommendation.

The Medigap Enrollment Window — Don't Miss It

Check mark inside a double circle icon

This is the detail that matters most, and it's the one most people don't know until it's too late.

When you turn 65 and enroll in Medicare Part B, a six-month guaranteed-issue window opens automatically. During that window, any insurance carrier offering Medigap plans in Missouri is required to sell you a policy — no health questions, no medical underwriting, no denial for pre-existing conditions. Once that window closes, carriers can review your health history and decline your application.

Missing this window doesn't mean you're permanently locked out, but it does mean your options narrow significantly. Some people in poor health find they can't qualify for the plan they want at any price.

We flag this window for every client turning 65 or coming off employer coverage. It's one of the most important conversations we have — and we make sure it happens before the deadline, not after.

Common Questions About Medicare Supplement Plans

  • When is the best time to enroll in a Medigap plan?
The best time is during your Medigap Open Enrollment Period — the six-month window that begins the month you turn 65 and are enrolled in Medicare Part B. During this window, carriers cannot deny you coverage or charge you more based on your health history. Enrolling outside this window means you may face medical underwriting, which can result in higher premiums or denial of coverage.
  • Does Medicare Supplement insurance cover prescription drugs?
No. Medigap plans do not include prescription drug coverage. If you choose a Medicare Supplement plan, you'll need to enroll separately in a Medicare Part D Prescription Drug Plan to cover your medications. We help clients select a Part D plan alongside their Medigap coverage so both pieces are in place before coverage begins.
  • Is Medigap Plan G available in Buchanan County and surrounding areas of Northwest Missouri?
Yes. All standardized Medigap plans, including Plan G, are available to eligible Medicare beneficiaries throughout Missouri — including Buchanan County, Andrew County, Nodaway County, DeKalb County, and the surrounding region. We serve clients across Northwest Missouri from our offices in St. Joseph and Maryville.
  • Can I switch Medigap plans after I've enrolled?
You can apply to switch Medigap plans at any time, but outside of your initial open enrollment window, carriers in most states — including Missouri — can require medical underwriting. If your health has changed since you first enrolled, you may be rated up or declined. This is one reason getting the right plan the first time matters, and why we take the time to review your full picture before making a recommendation.
